Trace in Space

Designed to assist a student as they gain a familiarity with the overlooked spaces most often inhabited, this project will focus on drawing otherwise forgotten, disregarded, or unobserved marks. A student will be asked to determine if a space is either most important to them or most often inhabited by them. Suggested spaces are one’s bedroom, living room, or even their father’s majlis or other area. The project will require them to take a seat and begin looking around, carefully observing the space. Looking for things that are often overlooked or discarded as not important, students will consider stains and cracks on the wall, interesting shapes on the floor, and other subtle information. Then, they will be asked to record these shapes and lines on transparent paper as a way to record the world around them. This project will introduce a student to composition and spatial illusion through line, shape, and color and convert observed information to a visual format. Students will be encouraged to use their imagination in their choice of color scheme and explore other facets of visual interest that make their otherwise overlooked space into a work of art.
